A problem of neoliberal governmentality is the absence of government, alongside the ever-increasing presence of the market in public life. We elect governments to protect our interests and defend our rights as citizens. However, the primary interest of businesses is profit, and not the well-being of people.
The culture of individualism – especially competition, choice and rampant consumption – promoted by the political philosophy of neoliberalism, represents the values that bind modern society together: I consume, therefore I am I. Under the ideology of individualism there is no longer any expectation for government to act as the moral referee, implementing legislation to facilitate fairness in society. Political accountability and governmental responsibility are concepts of the past-truth era.
The travesty of the neoliberal market society is that every market demands capital for individuals to be able to purchase the goods on offer. However, only a relatively few have the capital to improve their life-chances and opportunities by competing for goods in the market. situations of education, labour, housing and health. Consequently, the poor are punished for their poverty and blamed for the wrong choices they have made, which have increased their exposure to bads in the risk society [see chapter 6].
How can we use social media, to ensure that the government implements policies and legislation which are in the interests of society, rather than businesses?
Use your response to provide examples of specific inequalities where policy changes are needed, and what kinds of policies should be implemented.
I hugely agree. Neoliberalism has prioritised profit over people’s welfare, leading to inequality and hardship. We need a fairer approach that prioritises the well-being of all citizens over relentless profit-seeking.

I agree with the fact that we have to elect a government and that they can tell a white lie to make them feel better, not the rest of society, i disagree with the fact that poor people are punished for their mistakes and poverty, what bad decisions have actually come from the poor and not the rich, maybe the rich should own up to their mistakes instead of using a get out clause.

Neoliberism is a massive part of society and gives people the right to freedom of speech and makes people more reliable for themselves rather than relying on evidence

I agree with the fact that government are prioritising businesses over ordinary people and this is causing the issue of people living one pay check away from losing their homes. The main problem is that the opposition to this follow the same policies of prioritising the wealthy which means that it is nearly impossible for change to happen.

I feel as if any time there is a new group of people migrating to the UK, the media and society around us create a fear-mongering culture. For example in the 1950s, there was fear around Black Caribbean and Asian migrants. More recently, around refugees and Romanian migrants. It feels as if we are made to point the blame at each-other rather than the wider systems and institutions.

I also agree with the content of this article. While neoliberalism may have contributed to economic growth, there seems to be a growing deficiency in welfare. As a result, society is becoming more individualistic. Understanding and compassion for each other are necessary, and for those who enjoy economic stability, fostering a fair and equal societal atmosphere is crucial. I hope that in the future, the government will return to its role as an honest and moral mediator.

I agree with the fact that after the advent of neoliberalism, markets, and not governments, dominate the world. Neoliberalism guarantees freedom of choice, but it will eventually lead to a widening gap between the rich and the poor. I concern about issues related to neoliberal governance, diminishing role of the government. I think we need to change the structure of the market where the competitive culture intensifies and the poor are marginalized.

I agree neoliberalism has become a issue and has a huge impact on society as I am concerned that the divide between the poor and the rich will worsen positively impacting the rich and negatively impacting the poor and our compassion for one another will decrease which will cause delinquency and even more divide because of this

social media is a huge part of society and can be used to implement government policies. For example, petitions for subjects such as knife crime can be used to raise awareness and attention to the government to stress the severity of the issue. This, whilst bringing it to the governments attention will Laos help raise awareness amongst the general public

if enough people are raising awareness, it’ll be difficult to ignore the fact that people want change. The government won’t be able to ignore when thousands of people become aware of petitions in signs for change.
As long as people are in support, it’ll impact wider society and create change for everyone

the media can bring about pressure to lobby the government through mass online gatherings whether it be through petitions or simply on different platforms such as tiktok which can bring in massive amounts of traffic & make sure individuals spread the correct awareness of societys needs, with an example of this being in America about the death of George Floyd bringing about awareness and change to police brutality and the laws around them

neoliberalism is an issue especially for the lower class individuals as if they are struggling it is very hard to get support as the private sector is suited towards benefiting the middle class and businesses, if the government don’t support poverty then it is going to grow exponentially as the private sector can’t cope

I agree that neoliberalism is a problem as I feel as the government doesn’t care about the population, they only care about their own profit and themselves.

If enough people rose up against the government’s neoliberal policies then change could very well be implemented. A drastic change would need to take place in order to reverse damage caused by the neoliberal ideology. We could potentially stop using social media altogether if it continues to put business interests over public interests. The public make the businesses successful, the public are the bosses of all companies. If nobody shops there or uses their products then they lose capital and therefore power. However, the likelihood of people doing this is very very slim as not everyone is aware of the situation and decides to blame whoever it is they can, for example immigrants
